Each of your department managers are doing a good job of looking after their area. Targets are being met, work is being cleared and from all outward appearances it seems as though your organisation is a smoothly run and successful operation! What the casual observer doesn't see, however, is the bickering and back-stabbing, the poor communication, the lack of a common goal and low staff morale. To rectify all this you decided that all managers will undertake a team building program to bring that ‘warm fuzzy' feeling back into the office. Some fun and games where you run around and have a laugh is just the answer to all those problems. Or is it?

Headline: Negotiations: Focusing on what you need
Two children are arguing over an orange. They are smart kids and soon realise that they each must make a concession in order to reach an agreement. One of them, it is decided, will cut the orange while the other will choose their pieces. They believe that this will be the best way to ensure fairness. So, the orange is cut, the pieces are divided and the children walk away, oblivious to each other's real needs. You see, one child only wanted the juice for a drink, while the other wanted the rind to make a cake. Had they been focused on their needs, then both could have been satisfied completely, and no concessions would have been necessary. This example might be fictitious, but situations like this are played out daily in China, and across the world for that matter.

As winter descends upon the New Year with its gloomy frigidity, many people find themselves drained of energy and spirit. Whether due to the decreasing temperatures or the noticeable lack of sunlight, the bleak months from November to April often inspire sad thoughts and melancholy feelings, particularly for those who spend the bulk of their time indoors. Immersed in fluorescent light and artificial heat indoors then assaulted by harsh wind and bitter cold outdoors produces a sense of malaise commonly referred to as the "winter blues".

The relationship between an employer and an employee is like love. It's for ever and ever, right? Well if that's true, love isn't quite what it used to be, because these days in China, people are switching companies and positions with increasing frequency. And key questions for any HR practitioner must be, what motivates people to choose their jobs and how to make them stay in them?

Recruitment Transparency
In the last issue of Network HR, Allan Nee of Baode Law in Tianjin wrote a detailed and insightful article about the ways in which your organisation needs to adapt to China's new Labour Laws. Allan offered a myriad of fantastic advice. However, there was one factor he mentioned that really captured my attention - transparency.Read More

The Power of Acknowledgement
he seeds of this article were sewn as I put together the last edition of Network HR. First, as I edited the Training & Development section, I read the following prophetic words from Jennifer Peterson, "If you want your customers to feel cared for, you must care for the employees that serve them." This started me musing about the way organisations across China treat employees.Read More

Synchronicity for Success
A single droplet of sweat trickled down my neck as the glowing amber sun beat down on us. I glanced out of the corner of my eye and saw our competitors lined up alongside us. It was the moment we had been preparing for over the last 5 years. Our goal was crystal clear and I had visualised this very occasion countless times.Read More

War, what is it good for?
I believe I can bring the War for Talent to a peaceful end. I came to this realisation two
months ago after I was invited to present at the ‘Corporate Travel and Technology
World' conference in Shanghai. The topic, "Selecting Potential Leaders and Turning a Company from Good to Great", was
provided some months earlier, giving me time to source opinions from
around China. Read More
