Part 2 In the last issue of NetworkHR, we explored some techniques to assist us in becoming more comfortable and relaxed when we are networking at events or parties. I hope these helped you to overcome your nerves and feel confident. Now it is time to tackle the problems of who to talk to and how to approach them. Ancient Values that form the basis of modern communication
ClarkMorgan recognises the importance of cross-cultural communication and the need to train staff in bridging cultural gaps. Just two months ago, in the pages of this very magazine, Naomi Saunders from our Beijing office offered her perspective on the potential pitfalls involved in the meeting of East and West. This time around, we will look at the issue from a different angle, from a more traditionally Chinese perspective. Whilst I may not be able to offer solutions to every little piece of cultural conflict, I hope to offer a view from the other side of the bridge. I want to talk about some of my personal experiences whilst also examining the role, I believe, Confucian values play in modern Chinese thinking.

Ensure the odds are on your side with a fun casino
Entertainment options in China's major cities continue to grow and diversify at speed. For this reason, many organisations increasingly try to stage events that are ‘exciting' and a ‘break from the norm'. In such an environment, you do not want to fall behind. It is imperative that when you organise an event - whether it is an internal teambuilding event or an opportunity to entertain potential clients - you provide something that captures your guests' imagination and sets their pulses racing.

Getting a handle on a glass of your favourite Champagne
Champagne is the wine of celebration. It has launched a thousand ships, toasted a million weddings and marked countless special occasions. Unlike other wines there is no season for champagne, so no matter the time of year - whether it be a cold winter's night or bright summer afternoon - you can keep it on hand to seal a business deal, welcome a new born into the world or mark a birthday!

How web listings can save you time I am sure that, as HR professionals, you can appreciate that in the super-competitive Chinese job-market it can often be an overwhelming task to find the right person to fit your needs. With so many applicants boasting different skills and varying qualifications, cherry-picking the right individual can be a tricky process. This is also true with entertainment options. Imagine you are taking a very important client out to dinner or you need a location for a teambuilding event. In either instance you are looking for the perfect venue and perfect atmosphere, which are not always easy to find. |

Recruitment Transparency
In the last issue of Network HR, Allan Nee of Baode Law in Tianjin wrote a detailed and insightful article about the ways in which your organisation needs to adapt to China's new Labour Laws. Allan offered a myriad of fantastic advice. However, there was one factor he mentioned that really captured my attention - transparency.Read More

The Power of Acknowledgement
he seeds of this article were sewn as I put together the last edition of Network HR. First, as I edited the Training & Development section, I read the following prophetic words from Jennifer Peterson, "If you want your customers to feel cared for, you must care for the employees that serve them." This started me musing about the way organisations across China treat employees.Read More

Synchronicity for Success
A single droplet of sweat trickled down my neck as the glowing amber sun beat down on us. I glanced out of the corner of my eye and saw our competitors lined up alongside us. It was the moment we had been preparing for over the last 5 years. Our goal was crystal clear and I had visualised this very occasion countless times.Read More

War, what is it good for?
I believe I can bring the War for Talent to a peaceful end. I came to this realisation two
months ago after I was invited to present at the ‘Corporate Travel and Technology
World' conference in Shanghai. The topic, "Selecting Potential Leaders and Turning a Company from Good to Great", was
provided some months earlier, giving me time to source opinions from
around China. Read More
