Data mining - the missing link in HR decsion making
The role of human resources professionals is evolving! The HR department is no longer merely administrational and bureaucratic; it is now beginning to stand tall as strategically important in its own right. HR managers are now responsible for giving their organisation a competetive advantage in their field. Data-mining, the collection and analysis of key data, is one of the key factors in establishing this advantage.

Put the treat back into your company retreat
Each year, corporate directors allocate a substantial portion of their annual budget toward teambuilding and departmental cooperation. It then becomes the responsibility of Human Resource Departments to design and implement strategies to develop these crucial bonds. Sadly, the high daily workload of the average HR professional often means planning and decision making on such matters is left to the last minute. This often yields a hastily organised company banquet or a poorly attended corporate retreat. Ultimately, such events impact very little on company morale and are frequently viewed as impositions on the participants' already scare free time. Behind the fancy dinners and lengthy speeches, sit tables full of bored employees wishing they were home with their families.

Simple Ideas for Your Employees to Improve Their English
A common question most foreign English teachers hear from their students is "How can I improve my English when there are not enough native speakers to practice with?" The fact is that there will never be enough native English speakers for them to practice with everyday. So who will they practice with? Themselves! According to some news articles, China is on track to becoming the largest English speaking country in the world by 2025. Between 200 and 600 million Chinese students, at different stages of their education or careers, are still studying English. It would be impossible for the Chinese Education Ministry to recruit even one percent of that number of native teachers to practice their English with. But there are many simple strategies to get your employees to practice English amongst themselves without burning a hole in your training budget.

As winter descends upon the New Year with its gloomy frigidity, many people find themselves drained of energy and spirit. Whether due to the decreasing temperatures or the noticeable lack of sunlight, the bleak months from November to April often inspire sad thoughts and melancholy feelings, particularly for those who spend the bulk of their time indoors. Immersed in fluorescent light and artificial heat indoors then assaulted by harsh wind and bitter cold outdoors produces a sense of malaise commonly referred to as the "winter blues".

Recruitment Transparency
In the last issue of Network HR, Allan Nee of Baode Law in Tianjin wrote a detailed and insightful article about the ways in which your organisation needs to adapt to China's new Labour Laws. Allan offered a myriad of fantastic advice. However, there was one factor he mentioned that really captured my attention - transparency.Read More

The Power of Acknowledgement
he seeds of this article were sewn as I put together the last edition of Network HR. First, as I edited the Training & Development section, I read the following prophetic words from Jennifer Peterson, "If you want your customers to feel cared for, you must care for the employees that serve them." This started me musing about the way organisations across China treat employees.Read More

Synchronicity for Success
A single droplet of sweat trickled down my neck as the glowing amber sun beat down on us. I glanced out of the corner of my eye and saw our competitors lined up alongside us. It was the moment we had been preparing for over the last 5 years. Our goal was crystal clear and I had visualised this very occasion countless times.Read More

War, what is it good for?
I believe I can bring the War for Talent to a peaceful end. I came to this realisation two
months ago after I was invited to present at the ‘Corporate Travel and Technology
World' conference in Shanghai. The topic, "Selecting Potential Leaders and Turning a Company from Good to Great", was
provided some months earlier, giving me time to source opinions from
around China. Read More
