MSN or not to MSN? 3 Years, 7 Months ago Karma: 2
I've been a big supporter of using instant messengers (IM), in my case MSN Messenger, in the workplace. That's right, I said supporter.

A lot of companies aren't. They state that IMs reduce productivity, and encourage 'goofing off'. That's certainly possible, if staff are not engaged in their work, or don't have enough work to do, however, it ingnores the benefits of having another communication devise in the workplace.

For example, when an office phone rings it becomes of utmost importance; forget the fact that you may be deep in an important discussion. Everything stops for phone calls, even though most of the time they are not life-or-death.

IMs act just like SMS, however, they are faster to use, and are free! In fact, just while I was writing this string one of my staff asked me a question via MSN Messenger. I'll get back to him when I finish this line. Done. Ok, MSN here I come.

I love MSN too. Many companies I have visited in China use some sort of messenger system to communicate between departments and people.

Dr. Spock, my point is that a lot of companies think first of the weaknesses of IM technology (ie. it's abuse) rather than thinking about how it can save money, increase productivity through increased communication, increase motivation.

Does your company permit MSN Messenger?

Yes that is correct. Many companies think does not think of IM as a business tool and does not allow it. However, many companies especially in import/export industry I have met use this IM to talk with clients and send contracts etc.

My company does not allow MSN but for other reasons...

What is the reason they don't let you use IM?
